John Bagnell Bury

Clontibret, County Monaghan, gave birth to John Bagnell Bury in 1861, launching a mind that would reshape how Europe remembers the later Roman Empire. His father held the local Anglican rectory, but young Bury looked past the parish boundary toward Greek sources, medieval institutions and the stubborn life hidden inside dead languages. He carried that Monaghan clarity through Dublin and Cambridge, forcing scholars to take the later Roman world seriously instead of dismissing it as decline.
