Jane O'Toole entered the world in Baltinglass, County Wicklow, in 1858 before her family crossed into Dublin when she was two. That young age compressed a lifetime of loss and action into one breath, for she lost both parents before twenty and helped found Sinn Féin. The town hallows her because it is the place where the woman who would reshape Irish politics first drew air.
