James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormond

James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormond, died in Gowran Castle on 7 September 1405 after building the fortress in 1385 and governing Ireland through shifting royal conflicts. He rests in St. Mary's Collegiate Church beside three earlier Butlers, a rare alignment of blood and stone that still marks Gowran as the centre of their power. The castle may have felt less like a mansion than a warning, its walls built to hold both invitation and exclusion.
