Industrial site in Kilwarden

Industrial site

What is recorded here

Kilwarden hides a shallow iron-working pit on a west-facing slope, its black soil still crowded with charcoal and slag. Men digging for a modern gas pipeline uncovered the hole, proving that human industry once marked this quiet ground before memory faded. The site remains small, yet it records a time when fire and metal shaped daily life in County Meath.
Situated on a slight W-facing slope. Topsoil stripping (02E0194) in advance of a gas pipeline recovered an iron bloom and revealed a concentration of iron slag (BGE: 1A/47/1) that was completely excavated (02E0868). It proved to be a natural but shallow depression (dims 2.2m x 0.85m; max. D 0.14m) filled with a loose black soil with plentiful charcoal and iron slag inclusions, but smelting had not taken place in it.
