A contemporary description of the achievements of the first Earl of Cork (Ryland 1824, 343-4) records that he had built two bridges over the W-E River Bride, one of which was at Tallow, and a Bateman map of 1716 shows that the river was then bridged at this point. The present bridge is a wide, two-lane bridge of eleven arches that was built as a unit. The arches have dressed voussoirs and there are break-waters on the W, upstream, side. The bridge could date from the beginning of the 18th century, and is probably the bridge shown on the Bateman map. Ryland, Rev. R. H.
