What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished Kerry rath, sixty metres across, whose earth bank and outer ditch test trenches later confirmed beneath level pasture. It disappeared from sight by the 1940s, perhaps smoothed by ploughs or forgotten by herds, leaving only a curving field boundary to hint at its eastern arc. The name itself admits the tragedy: the place is known only because a map pointed at it before the grass erased the truth.

In level pasture. This rath is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 60m). A curving field boundary (Wth 2.1m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.6m; L c. 12m) may follow the line of the E arc of the rath. This is probably one of the two raths recorded in the 1840s in the N side of the townland (OSNB, Nohovaldaly, 11). Subsequent to the site inspection, archaeological test trenches were excavated in the area of the rath (Kiely 2003b, 172). These revealed that the levelled bank varied in width between 4m and 6m and also uncovered a fosse (Wth c. 3.5m) c. 1m outside the bank (ibid.). In the 1940s it was recorded that this rath, which was in Dan Kelliher's land, was no longer evident (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry).
