Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort in County Mayo, Ireland, where a faint circular bank still marks a large enclosure on a south-facing slope. The shape appeared on an 1838 map, yet people may have called it a fairy fort because the land kept its own secret longer than human memory. It is the kind of place where ordinary pasture becomes a chamber for stories, and forgetting becomes the first act of imagination.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Shown on OS map (1838) as circular enclosure (est. max. diam. c. 46m). Very slight traces of enclosing bank are visible. Possibly a ringfort. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 479. Date of upload: 23 January 2013
