On N side of Awbeg River. Millrace taken from river c. 500m to W. Roofless ruin of 4-storey, rectangular mill (int.: 18.42m N-S; 7.63m E-W), E elevation of 6-bays. Central wide door in E wall, with cut-stone surround. Wheel-pit (Wth 3.4m) alongside S wall, contains cast-iron axle of breastshot suspension waterwheel (Wth 2.8m; diam. c. 3.36m), which had slim iron arms. Part of pinion shaft survives in situ. Overflow channel to S. Extension of 2 bays (int. 5.94m N-S) on N side; second addition (c. 26.5m E-W; 7.35m N-S) attached to NE side. Fragmentary remains of further buildings on SE side of yard to E of mill. Conglomerate millstone and ceramic grain-drying kiln tiles at site. Lewis (1837 vol. 1, 478) describes this as 'extensive mills of Messrs. Norcott & Co.'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
