Moated site

What is recorded here

Indicated is a moated site in County Longford, Ireland, adjoining a rath immediately to the southeast. The raised subrectangular area measures about 32 metres northeast to southwest and 30 metres northwest to southeast, enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone 3.8 metres wide and 0.5 metres high. Fragmentary traces of an infilled fosse appear at the northwest and northeast, while a field drain has replaced the ditch at the southwest. A two-metre break in the eastern bank may mark the original entrance.
Adjoining a rath (LF019-107001-) immediately to the SE. This raised subrectangular area (c. 32m NE–SW; c. 30m NW–SE) is enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.8m; H 0.5m) that is slightly raised at each of its angles. Fragmentary traces of an infilled fosse (Wth 2m; max. D 0.2m) are visible at NW and NE. At SW this has been replaced by a field drain. A break (Wth 2m) in the bank at E may mark the original entrance. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 9 May 2012
