post box688 ydExplorer Tom Post box in Massbrook Lower is stuck on a wall like a grumpy uncle refusing to leave. It’s got an Edwardian crown but zero patience for your mail. Visit, then text me what it looks like from the road.
Massbrook HouseGates/railings/walls · 700 ydExplorer Tom Massbrook House gateway is making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene, which just means it’s fancy and stands out. It’s the entrance to an estate that probably has very good coffee and very strict rules about who can enter. I bet the gates are creaking with dramatic flair every time they open. Wave; it might let you in if you’re lucky.
Bush IslandIslet · 1614 ydExplorer Tom Another Bush Island in County Mayo is making its New Year's resolution to finally stand up straighter. It’s been slouching for years and it’s getting tired of the bad posture. You can tell by the way the grass grows sideways on one side. Bring a flask and pretend you own the place.
FarbreigaMountain / peak · 1.7 miExplorer Tom Farbreiga is hiding a secret message in its stones that only very tired hikers can decipher after a long walk. It’s right there, 4 km from Bofeenaun, but it acts like it’s a major international destination. Just keep looking at the rocks and pretend you’ve found something profound and ancient. Go at sunset and thank me later.
IndicatedEnclosure · 2.6 miExplorer Tom Enclosure in Lahardaun was designed by a mother-in-law who wanted everything exactly her way, down to the last stone placement. She left specific instructions on where to stand and how not to breathe too loudly. Go in good boots and better humour.
Graveyard3.4 miExplorer Tom Graveyard in Knockmaria or Addergoole has an ivy-covered church that looks like it ate a hedge and felt guilty about it. The local sheep have strong opinions about where the fence should be, so listen carefully to their bleating. It is marked on maps as ancient but feels very much like a nap spot. Tell the kids it's a castle. Close enough.
Titanic Memorial ParkMemorial · 3.4 miExplorer Tom Titanic Memorial Park: Imagine the Titanic ordering chips here; I reckon it would go for the extra thick, salted ones with a side of regret. Fourteen locals sailed off to America and never came back, which is a bit of a plot twist for a holiday park. It’s a quiet corner that reminds you how deep the sea really is. It's the kind of place that makes a dull Tuesday interesting.
Explorer Tom Nephin hosted a dance that went on for three days straight before everyone fell asleep. The floor is still sticky from all the spilled cider and sweat. If you listen closely, you can hear the fiddle music fading into the fog. Go on, count the windows and get it wrong like I did.
Lough CullinViewpoint · 4.8 miExplorer Tom Lough Cullin again? Apparently there are two of them, which is either impressive or lazy. I reckon the treasure is just a rusty biscuit tin buried under the mud, waiting for a brave soul. The Nephins in the distance are judging us, but we don’t care. Mind the nettles, they're the real guards here.
Explorer Tom Castle in Deelcastle hosted a dance that went so far nobody remembers who started it. They danced until the moon got jealous and left early, leaving only the echoes behind. A proper spot for a flask of tea and a big think, mate.
Explorer Tom Deel Castle claims it smuggled moonshine in barrels back in the day, but I suspect it just hid its own bad breath. It’s standing on that hill looking like it’s waiting for a carriage that never showed up. The wind keeps messing with its hat, so to speak, making it look even more dishevelled and confused. Ideal place to rehearse an excuse for being late.
Explorer Tom Battle of Castlebar in County Mayo is where a cow famously tried to buy its way out of trouble, or so the story goes. Eight hundred French troops against thousands of British? Sounds like a bad date scenario if you ask me. The ground still remembers the chaos, even if the cows have moved on. Dare you to say hello to it out loud.
