What is recorded here
The fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Magheragillerneeve OR Springfield is in County Sligo, Ireland. It is a slightly raised subcircular area enclosed by an earthen bank with a fosse at the external foot. Breaks in the bank at the west and east may mark the position of the original entrance. A central spine of slightly raised ground extends through the interior, though this rise has been largely quarried out in the past.
Straddling a low NE−SW rise in gently undulating wet pasture. Slightly raised subcircular area (56m NE-SW; 54 NW-SE) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2-2.5mm; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8m). At the external foot of the bank is a fosse (Wth 1.2-1.4mm; D 0.4m). A NNW-ESE orientated field boundary bank, with a drain on the E side, clips the fosse at NE-ESE. There are breaks in the bank at W (Wth 2.2m) and at E (Wth 3.5m); either may mark the position of the original entrance.
The interior slopes down gently from centre to N. A central spine of slightly raised ground, probably natural, extends on a NE−SW axis through the centre of the interior. This rise has been largely quarried out in the past, leaving an irregular-shaped area (28m NE-SW; 12m NW-SE; D 0.5m) of pits and hollows in the centre of the rath.
