Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a forty-metre rath hidden under trees in the Ballyvaughan valley, where a substantial eastern bank still stands though southern walls have sunk into grass. Westropp wrote in 1901 that it contained a man-made underground passage, and later maps marked a cave inside the ring. The earth may have swallowed more than stone, leaving only a holed upright marker at the eastern entrance to suggest what shape the dark once held.
Under trees in an area of improved pasture in Ballyvaughan valley. Indicated on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and hachured with the addition of a ‘Cave’ marked within it on the 1916 ed. It was listed as an ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). Westropp (1901, 280) described it as ‘a small levelled fort with a Man-made underground passage’. A heavily overgrown roughly circular rath (est. diam. c. 40m) defined to the E by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 5m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 2.4m) with some external facing, but at SSW and SW by a much lower bank (H 0.8m). Elsewhere it is inaccessible because of overgrowth. There is a possible entrance (Wth 2m) at ESE, lined on its W side by a holed orthostat (L 1.4m; H 0.7m). A Man-made underground passage (CL005-044002-) lies in the W sector.
