Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort on the west side of the Carrigduff River, where a semicircular earthen bank still rises beside the pasture. The eastern half disappeared before the 1904 map, but the southern arc remains embedded in the field fence, overgrown and quiet. Local tradition treats such rings as thresholds rather than human works, inviting wonder about what lived there before the land was divided.
In pasture, on W side of Carrigduff River. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 18m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; E half levelled on 1904 OS 6-inch map. Semicircular arc (25.5m N-S) formed by earthen bank (H 1.1m) survivesS->N; incorporated into field fence system. Bank heavily overgrown. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
