A limited archaeological excavation was undertaken in 1985 to facilitate the installation of cattle grids around two ogham stones (CO042-049001-, CO042-049002-) at Greenhill, Co. Cork (Manning 2000, 107-12). 'An old cut feature' was noted under the present field boundary in the vicinity of the most northerly ogham stone (CO042-049001-) (ibid., 112). The excavator suggested that the curving E and S boundaries of the field are possibly on the line of an ancient elongated oval enclosure (ibid.). The dimensions of this enclosure are c. 200m N-S and c. 150m E-W and the two ogham stones lie on its SE arc. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
