What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished crannog in Derrykin Lough, County Mayo, Ireland, where lower water has exposed a reedy margin and erased the oval island once drawn near the western shore. It may have been a small dwelling, a ritual marker or a mistaken line on an old survey, but the lake itself has changed enough to hide the answer. The nearby possible fulacht fia suggests people cooked, gathered or feasted beside that water, yet no wooden stump or stone ring remains for a visitor to touch.

In Derrykin Lough. A small oval island (max. dim. c. 15m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map in Derrykin Lough, very close to the W shore, with another small island/possible crannog (MA092-027----) c. 95m to NNW; neither is shown on later map editions where the margins of the lake are depicted as marshy. The lake levels have dropped so that the lake shore has receded by perhaps 20m from the levels shown on the 1838 map, leaving a margin of wettish reedy pasture. Ground rises gradually to W.
