There is a ford across a N-S section of the River Suck at the point where it turns E to meet the River Shannon c. 6.5km to the E, and on the line of the Esker Riada that was utilised by the Slí Mór. The ford could have played a role in the Battle of Aughrim (GA087-127----) in 1691 and was probably protected at that time by the earthwork (RO056-027002-) c. 90m to the S. The ford is a broad, shallow pool with islands that was dredged in 1989. A collection of artefacts (E000537) dating from the Early Bronze Age to the Middle Ages and which is now in NMI, was recovered by local divers prior to the drainage operations.
