This structure, No. 83 North Main Street, Bandon, comprises a four-bay three-storey mid-terrace building. It incorporates a structural oak frame and its construction is consistent with an early-17th century date. The frame is clearly visible in a number of locations on each of the three floors, most particularly on the internal spine wall between the large rooms to the front (N), the smaller rooms and staircase to the rear (S) and in the support structure of the sprocketed roof to the rear. There is a substantial masonry stack (c. 1m square) built into this spine wall at ground and first-floor level: it does not continue up to second-floor level. The stack appears to be a chimney that formed part of the 17th-century structure. Other early features include a basement undercroft in the eastern front ground-floor room, wide butt-jointed oak floor boards on the second floor, an iron hinge bracket set into the oak structural post at the door opening into the first-floor room, and brick infilled panels visible between the structural timbers in a number of locations in the building. There is a surviving (detached) six-panel raised and fielded door, which appears to be of late-17th century date. This door is currently stored at second-floor level and its original location is unclear. The structure includes a number of later alterations including a replacement double-pitch roof, sheeted timber partitions, and later ceilings of plaster and lath and sheeted timber construction. (Boyle 2013) The dog-leg stair with half landing to the rear appears to be a late 18th-century addition. gates/railings/walls23 yd

Explorer Tom Gates in Coolfadda were designed to stop horse carts from eating the pavement. Imagine your grandad yelling at a pony to watch its wheels! It’s like a medieval traffic cone that got stuck in time. Give it a cheeky wave, yeah?

Bandon Town HallTown/county hall · 42 yd

Explorer Tom Bandon Town Hall in Coolfadda was opened by the Duke of Devonshire back in 1863. It’s got that fancy Italianate style, which is basically Victorian fashion with extra steps. Bet it’s still judging your outfit from across the street.

Bandon CourthouseCourt house · 71 yd

Explorer Tom Bandon Courthouse looks like it’s been through the wringer, burnt in ’22 and rebuilt by ’27. It’s next to the Town Hall, looking stern because it’s supposed to represent order, which is a bold claim for a building.

water pump72 yd

Explorer Tom Water pump in Coolfadda, County Cork is a cast-iron relic from 1870 that’s now just for show. It has a cow tail handle, which is weirdly specific. Give it a pump and see what happens!

West Cork Heritage CentreGates/railings/walls · 76 yd

Explorer Tom West Cork Heritage Centre is just a fancy gate entrance pretending to be the main event. It’s got some serious wrought-iron arches and limestone kerbing that scream 'don't touch'. Find th-e most ornate bit of railing and give it a virtual pat on the head.

Bandon Masonic HallBank/financial institution · 78 yd

Explorer Tom Bandon Masonic Hall used to be a bank pretending to be a temple of permanence. Now it hosts Lodge 84 or Ancient Boyne, which sounds like a pub quiz night gone wrong. End this one with your own twist!

Children's playground83 ydComputer-made pictureChurch in CoolfaddaChurch · 91 yd

Explorer Tom Church in Coolfadda was built in 1610 and enlarged in 1829, so it’s seen some fashion changes. I’d describe the 1800s to a teen as 'slower internet' if I were it. Dare you to say hello out loud.

Floraville HouseHouse · 110 yd

Explorer Tom Floraville House in Coolfadda is set in landscaped grounds overlooking a river, probably because it thinks it’s too good for regular streets. It’s got a hipped oversailing roof and central chimneys, looking like it expects you to bow before entering. Go inside if you dare, but wear nice shoes.

Earthwork in CoolfaddaEarthwork · 111 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Earthwork in Coolfadda is supposedly a Danish fort underneath a church. O’Ríordáin recorded it way back, but nobody seems to have dug it up since then. It’s just a theory buried under religious architecture and old stone slabs.

foot bridge130 yd

Explorer Tom That foot bridge in Coolfadda replaced a timber one from 1853, so it’s got some serious seniority. John Buckley built it to handle pedestrians who walk too slow across the Bandon River. Ask it how many shoes have worn out on its surface.

Old ShamblesShambles · 153 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Old Shambles in Coolfadda was a meat market from eighteen seventeen with a sixteen-sided wall and corner buttresses. Now it’s flats and retail units, so the blood has been replaced by coffee shops and very modern fashion stores.
