What is recorded here

Described by J. O'Donovan writing in the 1830s as a possession of the Third Order of Franciscans (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 2, 19), and situated towards the bottom of a S-facing slope. A well, c. 50m SSE of the church site (RO022-148001-) and now removed, was not known locally as a holy well. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

Linked to Saint Nicholas, the site was traditionally associated with healing rituals and pilgrimages, particularly for curing ailments of the eyes and respiratory system. The Franciscan Third Order's presence suggests a medieval Christian devotion, possibly incorporating earlier Celtic or pagan well-cult traditions.
