Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a ruined fairy fort in County Mayo, Ireland. It is a circular earthen ring now broken by fences and pasture. The clay bank still stands eighty centimetres high on a southwest slope. A dark hole in the ground at the bottom edge may be a collapsed passage. People may have lived there, feared the fairies, or simply forgotten the name. The shape remains because the land remembered the hands that built it.
In pasture, on a SW-facing slope. Roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 34m N-S), enclosed by heavily overgrown earthen bank (H 0.8m), levelled; N to S. Field fence and road skirt E half of the site. Field fence bisects site's interior E to W. Possible collapsed Man-made underground passage (MA100-115001-) in SW. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 141. Date of upload: 11 February 2013
