Within the bawn (LF008-012003-) associated with the castle (LF008-012001-). The 1641 depositions record that during an attack by Irish rebels, 'the Rebells surprised and tooke from the Castle the well and all the water belonging to it' (TCD, MS 817, fol. 178r). Following this the people inside the castle dug 'a hole 40 foote [c. 12m] deepe in the bawne of the Castle & recouered water which refreshed them much' (ibid., fol. 178v).
