What is recorded here
Indicated is a hazel-covered oval cashel on a broad Clare hilltop, marked on maps since 1842 and still holding its shape beneath pasture grass. Its shallow stone tumble may be the remains of an earthen bank rather than a true wall, suggesting the fort was less a fortress than a boundary drawn around ordinary life. The later field wall follows that old line, bending west where the original enclosure turned, as if the land remembered the shape before people stopped naming it a fort.
In pasture at the N edge of a broad hilltop which slopes gently to the N, offering wide views out in that direction. Indicated on the first edition (1842) of the OS 6-inch map and hachured on the later OS 25-inch plan (1897) and Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This hazel-covered oval cashel (int. dims. 24.2m NNE-SSW; 18.5m WNW-ESE) is defined N-E-SW by stone tumble (Wth 2.5-3m; H 0.4-0.6m), which is possibly the remnant of facing for an earthen bank rather than a wall because of the paucity of stones visible. Facing-stones do survive on the tumble’s outer edge E-S. There is a slight berm (Wth 3m) outside the perimeter at E. From SW-N the perimeter tumble is overlain by a later double-faced field wall (Wth 0.5m on top; H c. 1.5m) which kinks W at W. However, this later wall probably more or less follows the earlier enclosure line. There is a later, livestock gap at N.
