What is recorded here
Indicated is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Carraun (leyny By., Tobercurry Ed), County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies a SW-facing pasture slope with a roughly circular raised area about thirty metres wide. A flat-topped earthen bank and external dry fosse define much of the perimeter, although agricultural activity has opened gaps in the bank. Traces of drystone revetment remain on the inner face, and a possible field clearance cairn lies in the eastern half.
In pasture, on the SW-facing slope of a rise. A raised roughly circular area (c. 30m E-W) defined by a flat-topped earthen bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.6m) SW-NE and by a scarp (H 0.6m) ESE-SE. The E edge of the rath is truncated by a field boundary and the S edge is truncated by a large hollow. A dry flat-bottomed external fosse (Wth 6m; D 0.7m) is evident WNW-NNW. There are numerous gaps in the bank due to recent agricultural activities. Traces of drystone revetment are visible on the inner face of the bank. The interior slopes gently down to S. There is a possible field clearance cairn (2m x 4m) in the E half.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
