What is recorded here
Indicated was a circular enclosure in undulating grassland near Cappagh House, marked on early maps as a tree-planted ring before the trees vanished and the earth itself disappeared during later land clearance. It may have been a boundary for a farm, a marker for a field, or a forgotten ringfort dressed in trees. The stumps and bank are gone now, but the shape remains in memory: a small circle that resisted the flatness of the land long enough to be seen, drawn, and finally erased.
In undulating grassland, in the former demesne of Cappagh House. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular tree-planted enclosure. The trees appear to have been removed by the time of 3rd ed. (1931) when it appears as a plain circular enclosure (D c. 40m). According to local information, it was removed during land clearance some twenty years ago, but is remembered as an elevated area of tree stumps surrounded by a earthen bank and outer fosse. No visible surface trace survives. Possibly a tree-ring or a landscaped ringfort.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
