Indicated

Although indicated as a circular wooded feature on the 1837 and 1914 eds of the OS 6-inch map, this was first identified as a potential monument in an unpublished archaeological LiDAR report (Davis, 2015) commissioned by Roscommon County Council as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the N5 Ballaghaderreen - Scramoge road development. It is located in grass and meadow grass at the summit of a hill. This is a circular area (int. diam. 46m N-S; c. 45m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (at ENE: Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.1m) NNW-ESE, with an outer fosse (at: ENE: Wth of top 3.5m; ext. D 0.45m) NNW-NE. The perimeter is reduced to a low scarp (H 0.2m) or slight fosse (Wth of top 4.2m; ext. D 0.1m) ESE-SW, and incorporated into the perimeter of enclosure (RO015-074001-) SW-N. There is no identifiable original entrance. The monument is truncated slightly at W by a N-S field wall, and the interior is overlain by an ENE-WSW stone-faced field bank towards the S edge and the perimeter is degraded S of this feature. An annexe is attached to the N and E and is visible as a berm (Wth c. 20m) defined by a scarp (Wth c. 4m; H 0.25-0.6m) NW-E. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 8 March, 2016
