Listed as ‘Enclosure complex’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). A possible field system was visible on an Air Corps aerial photograph (V231/65) taken in 1954. On inspection in 1997 this was found to be an area of partially reclaimed rough outcropping rock at the W foot of Abbey Hill. No archaeological features were noted. According to the landowner some paddocks and sheep shelters had been cleared away some years previously. An arc of a possibly medieval enclosure, a small possible hut site and some lazy beds are visible on Ordnance Survey orthophotographs 2013-2018 in an area of rock outcrop surrounded by reclaimed fields. The following image has been uploaded: CL003-019----_01.jpg Ordnance Survey orthophoto 2013-2018 Revised by: Mary Tunney Date of revision: 15 December 2020

Saint Patrick's ChurchHeritage attraction · 925 yd

Explorer Tom Saint Patrick's Church is complaining to the council that tourists keep mistaking its massive car park for an actual parking structure rather than just a convenient spot to park their clunky minivans. It says it's tired of being a photo op for people who can't find the church door. Have a sandwich here and call it a heritage lunch.

Saint Patrick's Catholic ChurchChurch/chapel · 927 yd

Explorer Tom Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Dooneen was built in 1938 with a breakfront gabled porch that looks like it’s trying to be grand. It’s got an inscribed foundation stone, which is very proper of it. Bring a jacket, it's never as warm as I promise.

Enclosure in Abbey EastEnclosure · 1143 yd

Explorer Tom Enclosure in Abbey East is just a circle of dirt pretending to be important on a reality show. I bet it complains loudly about the camera crew stepping on its toes. Get a photo with it before it gets a better agent and moves to London for the money.

Abbey HillMountain / peak · 1217 yd

Explorer Tom Abbey Hill in County Clare looks like it tried to be a proper mountain but got lazy and stayed flat. The first owner probably had an escape plan involving a hot air balloon, which explains why there is no abbey left. Go on a wet day, it suits the mood.

Ballyvelaghan National SchoolSchool · 1275 yd

Explorer Tom Ballyvelaghan National School was built in 1861 and now it’s a house, which feels like a school that became an adult. It probably posts 'nostalgia' on social media every day. Look serious, nod slowly, you're basically an expert now.

Corcomroe Abbey Geopark SiteVisitor information · 1.2 mi

Explorer Tom Corcomroe Abbey Geopark Site’s first owner had an escape plan that involved running away in a boat, but he forgot the oars were on the other side of the lake. He ended up just swimming back and pretending it was all part of the strategy. Go at sunset and thank me later.

Corcomroe AbbeyVisitor information · 1.2 mi

Explorer Tom Corcomroe Abbey would have 'RIP, But I Was Cool' on its tombstone if it were a person, because that’s exactly the energy it gives off. It’s been standing there since 1210 judging everyone who walks past, and honestly, it has every right to do so. Pretend you're a lost aristocrat, nobody will check.

Battle of Lough RaskaBattle · 1.2 mi

Explorer Tom Battle of Lough Raska was basically a fairy dispute over parking rights at the lake, which explains the chaos. The water is still arguing about who gets to sit on the best rocks today. Stand there long enough and someone will ask if you’re lost.

The Russell GalleryGallery · 1.3 mi

Explorer Tom The Russell Gallery is a ceramics place that also sells Tuscan olive oil, which is like buying a painting but getting a salad dressing included for no extra charge. The builder was definitely thinking about how much cooler this would look on Instagram before they cared about the art itself. Get there early and have it all to yourself.

Muckinish Castle (in ruins)Castle, tower house · 1.3 mi

Explorer Tom Muckinish Castle took forty cups of tea to build, which is either a lot or very little depending on how much you love your beverage at this particular moment in time. It’s perched there looking out at the water like it owns the whole view today. Hum something sad nearby, it adds atmosphere.

IndicatedBawn · 1.8 mi

Explorer Tom This bawn would teach history if it had to, and it would definitely start with a long rant about how bad the weather is here for your bones. It’s got that educational vibe but also very much the attitude of a strict schoolteacher who hates weekends coming up. Ideal for a moody photo you'll pretend wasn't posed.

Moneen MountainMountain / peak · 2.4 mi

Explorer Tom Moneen Mountain would say in a job interview that it has excellent stability and a great view of the bay, but needs more funding for moss maintenance. It overlooks Ballyvaghan with a mix of pride and mild annoyance at how busy the roads are below. If it's closed, admire it from the road like a polite stalker.
