Inch Saw Mills

Detached eight-bay two-storey woollen mill with attic, c.1800. In use as corn mill, 1945-6. In use as saw mill, post-1946. Renovated, c.1950, with roof partly remodelled. Now in ruins. Pitched roof now gone with replacement barrel-vaulted section, c.1950, having corrugated-iron, and no rainwater goods surviving on red brick eaves. Random rubble stone walls with dressed stone quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with red brick sills, some having red brick dressings, timber lintels, and remains of timber fittings. Square-headed door opening with lintel, and no fittings surviving. Single arch culvert over mill race with segmental arch having tooled cut-limestone voussoirs, and rubble stone soffits. Interior now derelict retaining iron mechanisms including waterwheel. Set back from road in own grounds on bank of canalised section of River Nore with overgrown grounds to site.

Representing an important element of the industrial legacy of the environs of Kilkenny City a modest-scale mill also known as Jennessy's Saw Mill and Archersgrove Mill makes a pleasing visual statement in an attractive setting on the bank of the River Nore. Although now long disused the survival of most of the original form and massing maintains much of the integrity of the composition while early mechanisms including the waterwheel identify the technical or engineering significance of the site.
