Hut site in Mangerton

In rough pasture, on a terrace on the SE-facing slopes of Mangerton Mountain. The remains of a circular hut site (4.4m N-S; 4.3m E-W) defined by a partially eroded, earth and stone bank (Wth 2m; int. H 1m; ext. H 0.5m). The bank is internally faced with a well-constructed drystone wall. Upright stone slabs form a revetment along the bank face externally NE-E. Elsewhere a scatter of loose stones lies close to the perimeter. There is an entrance (Wth 0.7m; L 2.1m) at the E which is defined at either side by a row of three contiguous upright stones (H 1.3m at N; 1.1m at S). The entrance stones lean slightly towards each other. Some prostrate stones lie to the E of the entrance may also have formed part of the entrance itself. There is another hut site (KE085-025001-) c. 30m to the E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry.
