Hut site in Houndswood Middle

Hut site

What is recorded here

Houndswood Middle is a circular hut site in the centre of a rath in County Mayo, Ireland. Low stone foundations, only twenty centimetres high but a metre and twenty wide, still mark its edges across seven and a half to eight and a half metres. The stones may have held a wooden shelter for someone who lived inside the larger earthwork, yet no name, date or preserved roof remains to confirm that use.
In the centre of a rath (MA121-143----). Recorded by Lavelle (1994, 30, no. 169) as follows ‘Circular hut site (ext. dims. 7.8m N-S; 8.3m E-W) in centre of interior, defined by low stone foundations (H 0.2m; Wth 1.2m).’ Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 January 2015

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
