Hut site in Hillgrove

In upland pasture in a terraced field on the E slopes of Bentee. On the upper terrace, which measures 20m long and 1.2m above a second terrace, is a drystone circular hut. The floor of the hut is 1m below the level of the surrounding terrace and measures 4.1m in diameter internally. The lintelled opening, .8m high x .7m wide, to a drystone-built Man-made underground passage (KE079-050001-) is located in the S face of the terrace. Access is gained to a long curving passage that averages .95m high and .7m wide; its well-built slightly corbelled walls are roofed by a series of slabs and feature a basal row of intermittent uprights and boulders. The passage extends N for 2.7m, where it narrows slightly and curves neatly to E to extend for a further 4.2m. It curves again to N for 3.5m, and close to its NE angle is an inaccessible creep way, beyond which an infilled passage extends E for at least 2m. The above description is derived from A.
