Barnastooka in County Kerry holds a small circular stone hut beside a larger livestock pen, waiting for people to remember how it was used. The walls still stand forty centimetres high around a narrow interior where rain, wind and animal breath may once have mixed. It is not a grand palace, but a practical room set inside an older settlement, and that simplicity makes it easier to imagine someone living there.

New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Barnastooka, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. The remains of a roughly circular hut site constructed of medium- and large-sized dry-stones, just inside the western limit of NICH36 settlement enclosure (ITM grid co-ord. 505553, 571346). Its wall is an average of 0.5m in width and 0.4m in height. The hut has internal dimensions of 1.5m (NW-SE) and 1.4m (NE-SW) and external dimensions of 3.5m (NW-SE) and 3.1m (NE-SW). Some collapsed stones occupy the interior but otherwise the walls are fairly well defined. Possible entrance in southeast obscured by fallen stones. Possible ancillary walls and the basal stones of a probable livestock pen occur just to the east of hut. This enclosure is 7.4m SW-NE and 6.8m NW-SE. See attached photograph courtesy John Cronin.
