According to the Annals of the Four Masters in the year 1600, Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone marched with a force into 'Fearcall', the country of Molloy, where he remained nine days, and the people submitted and made friendship with him, after which he proceeded over the Sliabh Bloom Mountains' (Cooke 1875, 160). Unable to locate a natural spring well that is associated with Hugh O'Neill. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
