House

According to the OS Letters 'Near his (Mr. Donnel's) house, there was formerly a "Great House" a portion of the walls belonging to which still remain' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 85). The OS Letters refer to a Mr. Donnel who lived in Maginstown when the OS was being conducted. It is possible that, apart from the mid-17th-century thatched house (TS076-012----) in the townland, a house of mid to late 17th or early 18th-century date was built at Maginstown which partially survived in 1840. No trace of this 'Great House' could be located in the outbuildings in the vicinity of the present Maginstown house. Its precise location within the townland is unknown.
