House

House, 17th century

What is recorded here

An impressive large two-storey house, annotated ‘Docter Richardsons House’ is depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Longford (NLI, MS 719). The house was the residence of Dr John Richardson, bishop of Ardagh, who died in 1654 (Crooks et al. 1999, 48). In 1698 the lands of Carrickglass were given to Trinity College, Dublin (Stubbs 1889, 147). The precise location of the house has not been identified but ‘Carrickglass Manor’, which was built in the 19th century (www.buildingsofireland.ie, Reg. 13401414, last accessed 1 August 2013), may have been built on or close to its site.
