House

The western-most of two adjacent medieval houses uncovered during the archaeological excavation of a moated site (CO064-156001-). The eastern house (CO064-156003-) had its long-axis E-W whereas the western house was on a N-S axis. Both houses measured approximately 10m by 5m. The remains of the western house consisted of the foundation trench for the walls of a wooden structure, and the stone foundations of a chimney within its NE corner. Sherds of Saintonge pottery found associated with both houses date them to the 13th century. (Cotter 2003a; 2005a) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
