What is recorded here

The first chamber was a small circular house in the west half of a rath, built around a foundation trench and dated by charcoal to 191 BC or AD 2. It stood beside two similar chambers to the south, forming a compact Iron Age dwelling rather than a lonely outlier. The by-pass works uncovered them in 1992-3, preserving a rare glimpse of an ordinary home that once faced the open country.

Located in the W half of a rath (MA071-042----). This house was discovered and fully excavated in 1992-3 during excavation (92E0152) of the rath in advance of the construction of the N5 Swinford by-pass (Walsh 1995, 7-8). It consisted of a circular structure (int. diam. 3.5-4m) defined by a foundation trench. No occupation surface survived but charcoal found in the foundation trench appeared to represent the burnt remains of structural timbers. Radiocarbon analysis of the charcoal produced an Iron Age date: 191 cal. BC–cal. AD 2. Two similar circular houses (MA071-042002-; MA071-042003-) were located immediately to S. (Walsh 1995, 7-8).
