house, COMMON (GLENGASH)

Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c.1800, with single-storey extension to rear. Pitched thatched roof with mesh over, thatch tied to stone pegs built into walls, and having two rendered chimneystacks; flat felt roof to extension. Limewashed rendered walls with square-headed openings, two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows, painted stone sills and replacement timber door. Single-storey outbuilding to northwest with pitched corrugated-iron roof having render copings, and rendered walls. Square-plan rendered piers to entrance with metal gate, associated cattle grid and timber pedestrian gate. Rubble stone garden wall to front of house.

This house is a typical example of the region's vernacular architecture. It retains original small window openings with timber sash windows. The painting scheme is attractive and traditional, with strong colour to the openings and door, contrasting with the white of the walls. The survival of its roped thatch roof is perhaps the most significant part of its character, as is the evidence for the earlier method of securing the thatch. The setting is pleasant.
