Holy well

What is recorded here

Holy well in County Carlow, Ireland, filled up by 1839. O'Donovan recorded it as believed holy, but the land holds no visible trace today. Whatever water emerged there has stopped, buried or forgotten. The absence does not diminish the wonder; it sharpens it.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 According to O'Donovan (OSL 1839, 110-11), believed to be holy. Marked on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as 'now filled up'. No visible trace

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
