Well indicated on the 1939 'OS 6-inch' map and listed as a 'Holy Well' in the SMR (1984) and RMP (1996) for County Louth.

Linked to Saint Carthage, an early Irish Christian saint associated with Carlingford, the well was traditionally visited for its healing properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes and skin. Local tradition holds that the water was especially efficacious when taken on Saint Carthage's feast day.
