Holy well in Killowen (muskerry West By.)

Holy well

What is recorded here

Killowen holds a small stone well last used for holy purposes around 1876. It sits beside an old baby cemetery and fort, enclosed by a low dry-stone wall with steps descending into darkness. The placement suggests people believed the water touched lives at both their beginning and end.
On E side of N-S field fence. Located, according to Broker (1937, 34), 'just outside verge of old baby cemetery [(9345)] and fort' (8730).Enclosed on three sides by dry-stone wall (H 0.7m; diam. 0.75m) and toppedby capstone. Opening (H 0.55m; Wth 0.5m) to E with steps down into interior. Last recorded in holy use c. 1876 (ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
