What is recorded here
Killowen holds an old baby cemetery beside a holy well, hidden beneath waste ground rather than marked by stone. Children may have lain there since the ringfort first circled the land, while women walked to the well for mercy or thanks. The earth keeps what the road has forgotten, waiting for someone to listen before speaking.
According to Broker (1937, 25, 34), 'old baby cemetery' within possible ringfort (8730). In waste ground to N of road. No visible surface trace. Located beside holy well (9281).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
