Holy well in Kilcroney

Holy well

What is recorded here

Unlocated well in the townland of Kilcroney. Lynch (1994, 642) recorded that there is a holy well known as ‘St Croney’s Well’ in the townland of Kilcroney that is mentioned in the 1930s Irish Folklore Commission, Schools Manuscript Collection (IFC S 913: 36; IFC S 468: 69). In 1838 the Ordnance Survey Letters recorded that ‘about sixty yards east of the church (WI007-030----) is a small well covered with briars and thorns, supposed to be Saint Croney’s Well, but it retains no character for sanctity in the neighbourhood’ (Corlett and Medlycott 2000, 16). The holy well in Kilcroney is associated with St Croney, a local early Christian saint, and was historically visited for its supposed healing properties. The well was recorded in folklore collections from the 1930s, indicating its longstanding role in local religious and healing traditions.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
