Holy well in Castlequarter (clandonagh By.)

Holy well

What is recorded here

St Moula's Well stood in Castlequarter beside Lady's Well, close enough to the church that Carrigan believed Molua was the original patron of Skirke. Water may have emerged there for prayers, births, fevers or memorials, while the nearby well gave the area a rare double ritual heart. The field has lost its exact mark, but the names preserve a place where ordinary people still distinguished between two holy waters.
Unlocated holy well known as St Moula's Well within townland described by Carrigan as 'St. Molua's Well' is in Castlequarter, in the next field to Ladys Well (LA021-047001-). The fact of this holy well being so near the church (LA021-0100001-) would go far to show that St. Molua was the original patron of the church and parish of Skirke' (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 136). St Moula's Well was situated in the field next to Lady's Well (LA021-047001-) (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 136). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
St. Molua's Well is associated with St. Molua, an early Irish saint known for his ascetic practices and connection to the monastery at Clonfert. The well is traditionally linked to healing cures, particularly for skin ailments and eye complaints, and its waters are believed to have curative properties rooted in local Christian and pre-Christian folklore.
