Downpatrick is one of Ireland's oldest towns, named for the royal fort of Dún Pádraig on a drumlin above the River Quoile. It served as the medieval capital of the Dál Fiatach and still keeps the cathedral where Saint Patrick is said to be buried. The old river estuary would have closed around that hill like a fist, making the fort both a throne and a trap.
