Hilltop enclosure in Maghernakelly

Situated on top of a drumlin. It is depicted as a large oval embanked enclosure on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’, and as a large hachured oval feature on the 1907 edition. This is an oval grass-covered area (dims 107m NW-SE; 69m NE-SW) defined by a scarp (Wth 1.2-1.3m; H 1.7-1.9m) and hedge, with a field bank at its base N-SSE replaced by a farm track SSE-WNW. An original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
