Henry Essex Edgeworth

Henry Essex Edgeworth, born in Edgeworthstown, County Longford, Ireland, became the last confessor of Louis XVI and the man who walked beside the king onto the scaffold during the French Revolution. He refused to leave France while Madame Elizabeth remained in danger, carried her final message across Europe to the future King Charles X in Edinburgh, and died in 1807 with the memory of that bloody morning still breathing through him.
