Helen Blackburn

Helen Blackburn was born in Knightstown, Valentia Island in 1842, the daughter of a civil engineer managing local slate quarries. She left that Atlantic edge for London at seventeen, where she helped build women's employment and suffrage institutions. Her name still appears on the Millicent Fawcett statue in Parliament Square, linking a small Irish island to the centre of British political memory.
