On 15 December 1899, Captain Reed drove three teams toward abandoned guns at Colenso while bullets killed thirteen horses and wounded five men. He retreated only because the beasts broke, not because he doubted the mission. That reckless loyalty earned him the Victoria Cross before he ever commanded a division.
