Kilconnaught holds a hearth scattered with rubber from a saddle quern and rusted iron, lying five metres northeast of an extended inhumation burial. The distance separates domestic heat from dead rest, yet both belong to the same soil. A person may have ground grain above a neighbour already asleep, unaware that intimacy crosses even death.
