What is recorded here

On a rise of ground overlooking the River Suir which is c. 200m to the E. Athassel abbey (TS068-013----) lies c. 150m to the SE and the bridge (TS068-013002-) and gatehouse (TS068-013003-) of the abbey lie c. 50m to the SE. The upper portion of the vault of a grass-covered stone structure is visible. It appears to have been built into the natural stoney ridge which overlooks the Suir. It is marked on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map as 'Grotto' indicating a small crescent-shaped feature but is not marked on the subsequent (1900-05) ed. It is likely to be a limekiln which was supplied with stone from the ridge on which it was built and also stone from the adjacent disused abbey.
