Northburgh Castle is a ruined Anglo-Norman stronghold completed by Richard de Burgo in 1305 to control Lough Foyle. The water narrows to about one and a half miles there, making ships easier to watch. A crooked gun damaged the castle badly in 1555, and later abandonment added to the ruin. One southern gate tower and vaulted chambers still stand.
